Not a Disappointment

We have made it as far west as we will go on this trip. We are camping at Cape Disappointment where the West Coast’s largest river (Columbia) meets the world’s largest ocean (Pacific). The cape got its name, in 1788, when a British captain was disappointed because of his inability to locate the river’s mouth.

Our visit here has been anything but a disappointment. This is the place Lewis and Clark ended their, three year, 4,000 mile, journey to the sea in 1806. It’s where you’ll find North Head lighthouse, one of the oldest functioning lighthouses on the Pacific coast. There’s also the Lewis and Clark Discovery Trail - a 17.3 mile out-and-back bike path that winds through the park and along the coast zigzagging through the dunes, grasses and trees.

This is what Mark and I call an epic park. It has everything we love; history, two miles of ocean beach, six miles of wooded hiking trails, two lighthouses and a biking trail. And I haven’t even touched on the small coastal towns you can explore just a few miles away. Plan to visit this place if you are ever in the area. You won’t be disappointed!
